Africa: Our Journey #56 A Perfect Day!

I went out to the barn right after lunch.  A few clouds were scudding across the blue sky.  The sun was hot but the trees were rustling in the wind.  It was a perfect day!

Africa was grazing in his pasture when I drove down the lane and waiting at the gate when I walked out of the barn with his halter.

Africa: Our Journey #55 Connecting at Liberty

Today a friend of mine video-taped Africa and me doing our audition for Level 3 Liberty.  I combined my two passions (horses and flute) in this audition.  When we started, I played the beginning of a piece of music and then the CD I had made with my flute teacher took over.

Africa: Our Journey #54 Elmers or Superglue?

I'm hoping this horrendous heat subsides soon.  I have spent more undemanding time with Africa this week than anything else.  It was just too hot for anything else.

Africa: Our Journey #53 Look Where You're Going

Last week I wrote about Africa's difficulty with the weave pattern at Liberty.  Well, Friday I discovered why he was having that problem.  While practicing our Liberty audition he followed the pattern easily.  Last week he had his eyes on me, instead of where he was going.  Consequently, he was tripping over the cones and not following the weave.  Friday, Africa paid attention to my body cues and watched where he was going.  The pattern was much smoother and Africa wasn't stepping on the cones.

Africa: Our Journey #52 Grandsons

My oldest daughter and her family are visiting from Florida so we went out to visit with Africa.  My grandsons love to rub him and feed him treats.  Africa was elated with all the hands offering cookies.

Then we showed off abit with a little "stick to me".  He was super, following at walk, gait, stop, and backup.  Can't wait to get out again and continue our Liberty play.

Africa: Our Journey #51 Breakthrough!

A breakthrough, indeed!  I've been trying to approach our sessions together without anger and impatience.  I know neither of those feelings are justified or good for our relationship, but I've had a hard time separating those feelings when I need to correct Africa.  When thinking about Phase 4, I associate it with punishment which happens when someone is angry.

Africa: Our Journey #50 Micromanaging

It may be synchronicity, but for sure I'm getting a message.  I read Linda Parelli's blog (Peeling Back the Onion Layers) dated July 23,2010.  She was writing about the session she gave in Ohio at the Celebration on Sunday.  The student had "no neutral" and was micromanaging her horse.  As I thought about what Linda said I knew I was doing the same thing; "send, coax, coax, draw, draw, push, push."  In other words, as Africa and I are playing at Liberty, I'm micro-managing him.  I'm not giving him the responsibility to do whatever patte

Africa: Our Journey #49 Leadership

Leadership.  Out of the triangle of love, language, and leadership, the last has been elusive for me.  How do I balance leadership with love?  Is this where the phases come in?  How does a horse learn or accept a human as leader?  Do the seven games provide the avenue for leadership?

Africa has accepted me as leader and I didn't really think about how it happened until thinking about the clinic learnings and our play since then.

Africa: Our Journey #48 It Happened!

I know how it happened but I didn't realize how much it would make a difference.  While working on how my body language influences Africa, I found myself more calm and confident. I'm using the carrot stick with less force or emphasis.  I'm more patient and can help Africa move into position without moving myself.  I'm learning to influence the correct zone.  Africa is responding calmer.  He pays attention and asks questions.  He is not running off in fear or confusion.

Africa: Our Journey #47 Body Language

Ended up in the ER Saturday with severe abdomonal pains.  Stayed over night for lots of tests.  Nothing found so I was released today.  Anyway, missed two days with Africa.  I felt bad because Friday we had a great session.  Back with him tomorrow. Yeah!

Africa: Our Journey #46 Magical: Mystery and Majesty

Magical!! That's how I describe it.  There is mystery and majesty in the connection between the horse and human relationship.  It has taken two days (so far) to integrate all the "ah-ha" moments.

I'm writing about the 4-day clinic I had over the weekend.  Jesse Peters, a 3-Star Parelli Professional, came to Michigan again and I feel like I've grown exponentially.

Africa: Our Journey #45 Liberty

What an incredible day!!  Day One of my clinic with Jesse Peters was awesome.  We started with remuda, self-evaluating the levels we thought we were playing at and setting goals for the clinic.

Creativity was our next task.  How many ways could we play the seven games?  I learned that being creative challenges both Africa and me and asks him to think more, to be more left-brain.  I know this creativity will bring excitement to our play.

Africa: Our Journey #44 A Step Up

I'm so excited!!  Africa loaded into the trailer after four times with approach and retreat.  We were headed to the farm where Jesse Peters is doing a four day clinic.

I always worry that Africa will decide that he doesn't want to load in the trailer.  Today I approached the activity with a more positive attitude, focusing on being calm.  I tried not to think about what I would do if he didn't get in.  I was feeling more confident.

Africa: Our Journey #43 Predator Comes Through

I could tell I was acting like a predator.  And Africa let me know when we got back in the barn.  He tried to nip at me, which he has not done in months.  I went home crying.

The afternoon started in harmony.  Africa came right to the gate when I got there, eager to play. We headed out into the field so he could graze abit before we went into the arena to play at liberty.  He did so well with weave, figure 8, stick to me, and the pedestal.  He even offered another weave.  I was so proud of him.

Africa: Our Journey #42 Renewal in Ohio

How do I begin?  My head is so full of thoughts about this past weekend.  I had the opportunity to be a volunteer for the Columbus Celebration and then attend the Gold Summit on Monday.

Africa: Our Journey #41 New Learning

I'm so excited!! Tomorrow I leave for Columbus and the Parelli Celebration.  I was excepted as a volunteer so have to be there Friday.  I can't wait to experience the excitement, positive energy, and the celebration of the horse again.  Each Celebration creates awe, laughter and tears, and confidence.  I come away recommitted to PNH (Parelli Natural Horsemanship), with the confidence to build a stronger relationship with Africa.

Africa: Our Journey #40 Liberty

As I look back it's been almost a month since I blogged.  The end of the school year is so hectic and add to that shopping for the new house addition seemed to take up so much time.  Africa and I crammed in some time together but not as much as I would have liked.  Now the school year has ended AND I'm retired!!!

Africa: Our Journey #39 Water Play

It wasn't suppose to be so hot today, but the sun was shining strongly.  A great day to play in the water spray.  Africa remains right-brained during bath time, so we only played with water today.  He was calmer today, but still wants to be facing me at all times when I have the hose in my hand.  He will stop circling, but his hindquarters always turn away from me.  I'm not sure how to help him feel safe when the hose is behind him.  We will continue to play in the spray.

Africa: Our Journey #38 Left-brained Trailer Loader

I find my thoughts going to Africa and to planning our time together even when my schedule keeps me from him.  Our connection carries on at all times.  I justify time away by telling myself that it is good for both of us to have space.  But then the guilt surfaces and I feel as though I am neglecting him.  We will pick up our time together again when school is out in three weeks.

Africa: Our Journey #37 Flexion and Corners

It's amazing how sun and a little warmer weather can change your whole outlook.  Africa's pasture is a mudhole and he was speckled with mud spots, but the sun shined warm on our backs.

Africa: Our Journey #36 Undemanding Time

Our home addition is almost finished and we have had to spend more time with the details.   It hasn't afforded much time with Africa.  Plus it has poured rain and been very cold for several days.  It's funny how in the winter we endure much colder weather but by spring fifty degree temperatures are COLD.

Africa and I have spent mostly undemanding time in the last couple of weeks.  It has been a nice change of pace after concentrating on our audition.  Eating grass, being together, and grooming has been our routine.

Africa: Our Journey #35 Wonderful news!

A few sessions back I was writing about proprioception (teaching the body new ways to work together, feelings that go with retraining the inner body in movement).  My last riding session afforded me the opportunity to physically feel what was going on inside my body.

Africa: Our Journey #34 Ah-ha Moments

Ah-ha!  Amazing realizations came to me today.

My plan for our session included review on-line and then move to liberty.  We play in the arena, which I can close-off when no one else is using it. Africa has the whole space to move around in.  While I set up for weave, figure 8, sideways over a pole, and step on the pedestal, Africa played with his big green ball.

Africa: Our Journey #33 Proprioception

When Africa and I were riding the Figure 8 pattern for our Freestyle audition, I noticed he would make a wide curve or walk off in a straight line after turning around the barrel.  I thought he was being contrary.

Africa: Our Journey #32 Woo-hoo!

Africa is a star!  Day 4 of trailer loading and four feet on a pedestal.  He is getting lots of practice backing out and today he stayed in the trailer until I asked him to back out.

For the first time, with help lifting his back feet on the pedestal, he left one on the pedestal while I lifted the other. Four feet!  He stood there without moving even when I walked away.

Woo-hoo!!
