There's never a dull moment! - Lily's Log #18

Today, like every other day, Lily provides both insight along with comic relief that is unmatched by any other horse I have ever met.

a walk to remember - Lily's Log #17

Saturday, I decided to take Lily out without Kiowa for some one-on-one play in the open BLM land across the street. Mom brought the new mini along so he could explore and they could bond. Lily was a little excited when we first left, especially when our neighbor showed up ground driving her gorgeous mule, Lucky! Lily and Lucky were very interested in eachother, so it was good practice for both my neighbor and I to manage both equines behavior effectively. Lily did great.

Bruises and Beautiful Moments- Lily's Log #16

Nature breeds sure-footed horses.....except, of course, my awkward 3 1/2 year old giraffe named Lily!

Eye of the hurricane! - Lily's Log #15

Mom and I decided to take the horses on a walk Sunday to get them out of the bog that the corral has become. Mom took her horse Kota and the new mini, now named "Ponytah" (my 8 year old nephew's idea!) while I had Kiowa and Lily. They all did great as we walked around the neighborhood meeting neighbors whom will hopefully soon be friends. As we were nearing the the homestretch, we were walking on a wide easement seperated from the paved street by a very deep ditch.

*insert clever phrase here* - Lily's Log #14

Sorry, It's been one helluva week! My husband had to be taken to the emergency room on Sunday for an emergency appendectomy, so not a lot of rest or time for the horses in the last few days. He is fine and recovering well. The surgeon said we came to the hospital in the nick of time, another hour and his appendix most likely would have burst!

Down, girl! Lily's Log #13

Went out to spend some time with the horses before heading back into town for a doctor appointment. I haltered Kiowa and brushed both of the girls out. They loved every minute of it! I realized that I have not been as consistent as needed for Lily to appreciate that I am not a chew toy. I watched how Kiowa and Kota would allow her to do only so much before they corrected her. It showed me that I have been very lenient and not very effective when it comes to defending my space. After a few times of throwing a Kiowa-like reaction when she was disrepectful, Lily's whole demeanor changed.

When the impossible becomes possible...Lily's Log #12

I got out to play with the girls on Monday and the weather was positively glorious!!! 60 degrees, sunshine, no wind.....heaven! The corral even managed to dry out all most completely. I decided to visit with the newest addition to the herd, an approximately 11 year old miniature paint stallion! He was bought as a project for a friend of my Mom's, who promptly changed her mind in the first week! Mom got attached in the same time she got disinterested, so we kept him. I believe he is a RBI, with some LBI tendencies that may develop as he gets more comfortable.

I actually rode my horse! Lily's Log #11

Kiowa of course.....I enjoy the ability to walk independently too much to entertain the idea of getting on Lily anytime soon!

I LOVE my Girls!....Lily's Log #10

They have been FANTASTIC over the last two days! When I played with Kiowa, Lily followed right along at liberty, doing everything that I ask of Kiowa along with her! It's really amazing to see the try and the the desire to play come up in her. Today, Kiowa learned to jump the rock and stop halfway, something she has struggled with for a long time. I am really proud of her! I think the biggest factor was strategically hiding cookies on all of the toys (i.e.

I thought Nevada was a high DESERT! Lily's Log #9

It has been raining all day! UGH! I did go out and spend a few minutes with the horses, but I had to run in since the rain was turning to snow and it was getting COLD! Lily did a few very soft yields of her forehand with the driving game at liberty....I was very impressed! Apparently something we did last time made sense! Kiowa was wonderfully responsive, as I have come to expect, and even backed through a squeeze between the fence and the tire feeder with only phase one porcupine game. I am continually awestruck by how talented and willing these formerly wild horses are.

Could it be that simple? Lily's Log #8

I am so proud of Lily! Playing with her Tuesday night was like playing with a completely different horse! She was so soft and willing when I started with the porcupine game. She, oddly enough, has trouble with the driving game towards her forehand. We are working through this slowly, taking the time it takes to keep her confidence intact. I believe it is a respect issue more than anything as she can be very dominant at times. Because of this, we struggle with leading from zone 3.....Oh Boy! something else to work on!

OMG! is ...that...THE SUN! Lily's Log #7

AHHHH! Finally, the sun is out and there is a glimmer of hope that the girls' corral will be dry by June..lol! When I got to Mom's house Sunday morning (where my horses live due to my husband's severe allergies) I found all five of our equines (3 horses and 2 donkeys) sprawled out soaking up as much sun as they could in the only dry spot in the corral. I couldn't wake them up, they looked so peaceful and relaxed! I ended up just spending some quality time with Mom for a few hours.

I should have got the Water Buffalo...Lily's Log #6

The title is, of course, a joke. I found an ad on Craigslist for a water buffalo shortly after adopting Lily, and there are days when teaching a water buffalo Parelli seems like an easier task than teaching this extremely challenging little mare....today was one of those days!

Thank you, new Level 1 and patterns! .....Lily's log #5

What a weekend! In spite of the sleet/rain/snow, we had an amazing weekend, the girls were fantastic. I think I can even see the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel that is Lily's journey! We started off with some unfocused play on Saturday, with some struggles. Lily is still not a fan of circle or sideways, and she was VERY sensitive. Sideways along the fence looked something like this: Stick waving towards neck, up phases until I touch her...barely.... followed immediately by a rearing lunge.

Kiowa steals the spotlight...Lily's Log #4

I went out to play with the girls today and found Kiowa begging to play at liberty. She didn't seem to want the halter on and really didn't seem to need it. I was a little suprised at first, to have her offering so much right away, but I focused and was able to ask for some magnificent things. The only thing she struggled with was the circling game, which is her worst anyway. She is very LBI and doesn't seem to understand why I insist she go in circles to nowhere!

From rivals to playmates....Lily's Log #3

I went out yesterday to play since it was finally dry enough and Lily's sprained left hind fetock had resolved and was pleasantly suprised to find my girls waiting at the fence. Oh Boy! I grabbed one halter and the 22ft line because I really only planned to play with Kiowa and let Lily's leg rest a little longer. Kiowa caught me very quickly and I sent her to the small car tire (about 13" in diameter) in the pen, where she put both front feet in! She has nevered offered this before without a lot of coaxing.

Play with the horse that shows up....

I was very excited to take the horses out for a short walk through the neighborhood to get them out of the sloppy bog that their corral has now become, and please to see them all waiting at the gate. Mom and I opened the gate and they came out, one by one, to be haltered. As I was getting Lily's halter on, she side-stepped and it looked strange so I asked her step out at a brisk walk and was able to se the definitive limp off her left hind foot. I reached down for a closer look and felt the heat and swelling in her fetlock.

Lily's Log....entry 2

This weekend, Mom and I set up obstacles to play with all over the arena. Lily LOVES the tarp! She paws and chews and stomps it to death. It's nice to see her losing fear over objects. She also loves barrels and cones, and chewing on the small tire...very cute! She was in sucha good frame of mind, I decided to try out the bareback pad and see how she felt. Well, she tightened her own girth! She was a little nervous when I fist held it up to her back, but with approach and retreat, she accepted it in a matter of minutes.

excuse me, have you seen my LBI?

This weekend, Mom and I decided to flex our creative muscle and set up some obstacles to play with instead of the usual trail walk. Kiowa was on fire! I have not seen my unmotivated LBI that playful and full of energy in a loooong time! It was so refreshing and fun to have that energy from her and know what to do with it! She did some amazing things, all with a bright, happy expression on her face and nickers almosts non-stop.

What would Pat Parelli do?

That has become my new mantra for dealing with my extreme RBE/LBE, Lily. After a nice long walk on Wednesday, we were on our way home and I failed to notice that the horses being ridden about a block away from us were having a strong affect on her. It began with head shaking and fidgiting, which I, at the time, attributed to her LBE energy so I began giving her little jobs. Then she got MORE upset and to the point that she was rearing and  shouldering over the top of me and had become very right-brain.

Lily's log....back to the beginning

I decided that I am going to go back to when I first got Lily to catch up and use these blogs as a way to chart and document her progression through the levels.

I started looking for another horse about 3 1/2 months after my beloved Cher was laid to rest. She was my first horse and I was devestated when I lost her. Kiowa (now 18) came into my life as a 10 yr old when I decided to retire Cher completely at about 27 years old and persue more active horsemanship.

Oh, the wonder of a 3 yr old LBE/RBE......

So, today with all the muck and ice in the yard, my husband, my mom, and I decided to take "the girls" for a walk to dry out. My mom took her 12 yr old, usually LBI, Quarter horse cross, Kota, and my husband Earl took my mustang mare Kiowa (18 yr old LBI). This leaves me with the newest member of the herd, Lily the Nevada estray (mustang). She is a VERY extreme LBE/RBE with some RBI tendancies when she's learning.
