...oh yeah and to have some fun doing it !

I've Got A Feeling....

Tenatively I have started to exercise Bea in hand, vets orders.  No tight turns, no turning on the forehand, definitely no jumping, avoid hard ground, a little trotting, say six or so strides, no circles or sideways, also vets orders.  So what do you do with a horse you can do almost nothing with, she stiff on the hind, striding shorter of the right fore sometimes pottery...nightmare.   Then I remembered something I saw at the FOTH something Pat said about having a horse at your shoulder, not behind you and not in front.  You have this then your horse is acting like

Confidence

Confidence is an interesting word , we want our  horse to be confident,I want to be confident , I sometimes pretend to be confident when I am not to get my self through something and I have thought Dundee is confident when he is probably not there yet .

Trailer Loading and doing his feet has brought this home to me , I realy need to be confident in what I am doing and am getting there having lessons with Max and studying is helping me do the right thing at the right time .

Being complex has its simple side.

Starting Level 3 online with Gemma is turning into one of the most fascinating things I have done in a long time.

Do I Want To Do This Anymore?

After two plus months of watching a lame horse go from bad to worse, then having no definitive diagnosis from the vet. I have been questioning if I want to stay in horses at all. In part I still am asking myself that question as the prospect of searching for yet another partner seems too hard to comtemplate.  I know the fat lady aint singing yet and the lameness issue with Bea is far from over.  When the splint she is now suffering from heals we could still be paying yet another visit to the vet if the lameness remains.

Thresholds

One of the topics of discussion during the savvy club UK summit meeting with Linda and Pat Parellis was Thresholds.

Comfort Zone !

Today I moved out of my comfort zone again !

Its that time of year when the grass is much more interesting to Dundee than myself . So rather than DD having  the game of getting me moving I decided to experiment with him .

Weight and balance

Pat Parelli tells us that horses are nature in its finest form.   James Shaw tells us that horses are perfectly balanced and respond to the shift in balance of the rider.   They can only move in accordance to the balance they feel on their backs.

Puzzle Sweet.

As Bea goes from bad to worse lameness wise it makes sense to divert my attention onto my other lame duck Gemma. She can't be ridden due to a pelvic problem fortunately she can still play, run too though if she overdoes the running bit she tends to be stiff in the morning.

Bill Dorrance and Treats

I thought it was about time I read direct from the old master that so many of the exponents of Natural Horsemanship quote.

So I have started on his book Horsemanship through Feel.   Now is that not an interesting title?

Those of you with LBI's will be aware of how motivated these horses are by FOOD.  and I have worried on this treat business.

Under Pressure...

Playing with Gemma has become somewhat of a habit and tends to be a leveller as what is too much for Bea at the moment makes little difference to Gem.

Red Hot Reins

Linda's article in the recent Savvy Times struck a chord with me.  She was writing about releasing the reins as tho' red hot to get Remmer more into self carriage.  and how fabulously it worked.

Well I thought to try it on my mare.   Not in a dressage scenario but in everyday riding.  My conclusion is that I have not in the past been releasing the reins quickly enough as the results of using a red hot rein were dramatic.  The improvement in Bustle was magical.

Playing with Gemma

Playing with Gemma is something I haven't done for months.  Gem is an Arab X Connemara and has intelligence and spirit.  Probably far too much horse for me when I got her but then I didn't know any better.

Rachael`s course

Jazz and i attended a level 3 course at "The Homestead" at Mercaston at the begining of last week.

I was on a llevel 3 course because it was offered to me after a course in January was cancelled, i was a bit concerned i would be the course numpty, but it went very well and i didnt disgrace myself  (I think).

So the first thing Rachael said on the Monday was, who knows what the 8 principals of Parelli are? so Jane and i were able to put our hands up with only a few others and feel a little bit smug.Good old learn. Anon.

Wow!

Wow ! What a day we had yesterday , Max came over to gives me a lesson . As it was so hot and i didnt want to overdue it with Dundee , we worked the lesson around preparation for riding .

I hadnt realised quite how important and precise the porcupine game needs to be for riding . But it is now all fitting into place .We played with lateral flexion and preparation for the indirect rein and hindquater yield , once DD knew what we were asking he responded realy well .

Hej från Sverige ! ! !

Hello from Sweden

first i would like to apologise for not telling everybody about our planned move, however it all came together scarely quickly and i had so much paper work for all three of us i had to priotise that.

Change is as good....

Playing with circles is not Bea's favourite occupation.  She can't see the point in them even with treats.  So I tend to change it up alot to get her focus, if I get the balance right we tend to get any number of laps at trot and canter.

The difference was...

Picture this, me Bea and one barrel.   Now Bea has an aversion to jumping anyway, (far too much like hard work) and one barrel  means infinite avoidance tactics.  So I was half expecting this little exercise to take time.

The first attempt saw Bea stop and push the barrel with her nose....very clever but not what I wanted. At the second attempt I didnt look at the barrel or Bea I focused on where I wanted her to land.  She popped straight over turned and faced me.............WOW.

Keys to Success

I am normally quite an independent soul used to , battling along on my own to get things done . Since studying Parelli , I have realised  success doesnt necessarily happen like this .One needs Attitude , knowledge , support ,Tools , techniques , time and imagination .

Doing something always leads to something else...

Bea has been lame for a few days due to a sore shoulder.  So ammending the RICE option I've used countless times on athletes and massage, I treated it myself. She's now well on the way to recovery, I can see a slight dip but nothing too major now.

When Not To Ride

Ever had the feeling that getting on board would be a bad idea?  That's what happened to me today.
