MUMBAI: A dozen residents of a plush housing complex in Borivali were targetted in a sextortion case by an individual who contacted them via Facebook posing as a woman.
He sent obscene images to them and threaten to circulate screenshots of the conversation to defame them. A police investigation revealed that the accused was a man living in the same building and looking to earn a quick buck as he was unemployed.
“The residents were being harassed for two months but were too scared to approach us until now,” said senior inspector Anil Avhad, Kasturba Marg police. In May, a 52-year-old resident received a friendship request on Facebook from an account which had the display picture of a woman living in his building. He accepted the request.
The “woman” asked him how he was and that he wasnt seen often in the complex. As days passed, she started sending intimate messages and pictures to him. She then threatened to circulate the screenshots among his family members if he did not pay up. The man paid Rs 12000.
Ten to 12 other residents of the society also received Facebook friendship requests from the same account. They accepted the request and were being blackmailed in a similar manner. On July 30, the 52-year-old man who had already paid up was given dire threats that his child would be harmed if he did not shell out another Rs 10000.
In the meantime, the woman from the society whose display picture was being misused was alerted by her neighbours and was shown the obscene conversations on Facebook. She approached the police along with the 52-year-old man and an FIR was lodged.
“We laid a trap at the location where the accused was supposed to pick up the money. Our officers placed an envelope under the rear wheels of a car to lure him into picking it up. He was caught red handed on Sunday,” said Avhad.
The accused, Sushant Talashilkar, 29, has been arrested on charges of extortion and provisions of IT Act. Talashilkar has studied upto class X. He does not have a previous crime record, police said.
